Man-of-the-Moment: Christopher Kane Spring 2011 (see the collection at  Elle UK): tribal-meets-neon color, fifties twinsets-meet-the- future!

Style & Fashion

La mode se démode, le style jamais.
Coco Chanel

We’ve quoted this before, Coco Chanel's declaration that fashion goes out of fashion, style never!  But perhaps it is this very thing, the fleeting, ephemeral nature of fashion that can bring some fun to style.  Staying au courant this fall and winter means embellishing one’s own style with pickings from current trends for fall and the best of Fashion Week offerings: the glitter of brocade on a dress, a faux fur headpiece or feather jacket, kitten heels, coming full-circle with fifties-inspired looks, floor-skimming dresses with low heels, and glorious playful neon color.  Style is also the art of winnowing.

Striking Gold

Shimmer of brocade at Balmain, gold lamé dresses at DVF, even gold dresses at minimalist Reed Krakoff.  Gold is transformed into bronze-y metallic armor at Rodarte (Photos of the moment of Rodarte at nytimes.com)

50-50 (full-circle!)

Fifties-inspired dresses and separates, twinsets,  full-circle skirts.  Prom night at Oscar de la Renta, a look that has been trending for some time now.  Always updated, modernized.  Christopher Kane does it best.

Furred and Feathered

Fur (we say go faux) and feathers. The Martinete marabou feather jacket from J.Crew Collection which seems to have already sold out.  If it has to be fur, its all about being playful and colorful.

Gypset Winterized

Layered looks with glittering embroidery and brocades from far-flung bazaars (that just-picked-this-up-last-week-at-the-souk look), fur headpieces, glittering baubles, over-the-top.

Camouflage

The military look is still with us, but is muted, Camouflage and surplus green jackets softened with pretty skirts (think Watanabe’s military jackets).

Neon Color

Monochromatic colors, intense hues.  Also, man of the moment, Christopher Kane, has gone fluorescent!  He seems to have captured what modernity is now...tribal-meets-neon color, fifties twinsets-meet-the-future!
